Origin Story
The source image for this painting is from a sculpture of teeth laid out on a table top that I found around 2013. When I initially conceived of the painting I decided to stack the teeth up on the horizon line reminiscent of a Guston or Morandi tableaux. The configuration looks a bit like cheerleaders to me. I love that it can feel like a combination of playfulness/ silliness and existential dread. Over the years I have made several versions in different sizes and formats. The largest (60x54 inches) was shown in 2019-2020 at Mass MoCA.
